The Minister

Emergency Services Minister Neil RobertsNeil Roberts was born in Charleville on 3 January 1955. In 1967 his family moved to Brisbane where they owned and operated a newsagency in Banyo.  Mr Roberts attended high school in Brisbane and commenced his electrical apprenticeship at the Banyo Railway workshops.

Mr Roberts worked as an electrical fitter and mechanic, occupational health and safety trainer and industrial advocate before being elected as the Member for Nudgee in 1995. He successfully completed a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in 2008 and holds a Bachelor of Business and a Company Director’s Diploma (GAICD).

Mr Roberts served as Parliamentary Secretary in a number of portfolios including Education, Employment and Training, Families and Disability Services, State Development and Innovation and Treasury and Infrastructure, before being sworn in as Minister for Emergency Services on 10 July 2007.

Since becoming Minister, Mr Roberts and Premier Anna Bligh have initiated significant reforms aimed at refocusing resources towards front-line service delivery. The Queensland Ambulance Service Audit and Queensland Fire and Rescue Service Review have resulted in significant savings being re-allocated to front-line services and demand management initiatives.

Mr Roberts has participated in Parliamentary Trade Delegations to Japan and South Korea (2001 and 2005) and led a Parliamentary delegation to Malaysia, Singapore and Papua New Guinea in 2008.  In 2006 he participated in a business study tour of China.

Mr Roberts has lived in Banyo for more than 40 years. He is married to Jenny and together they have two daughters. Mr Roberts’s interests include spending time with his family, reading and current affairs.  In his early twenties, he travelled and worked in New Zealand, England and Europe.
