Mission

To serve and support the Queensland community in preventing, planning for, responding to and recovering from emergencies and disasters.

Our Core Business

To save lives, protect property and help preserve the natural environment through the delivery of emergency and disaster management services.

Our Vision

To be a world-class provider of emergency and disaster services, contributing to the safety, health and well-being of the community of Queensland.

Community Outcome

The delivery of effective emergency and disaster services will enhance the safety, health and well-being of the community and contribute to the achievement of the following whole-of-Government priorities:

Safer and more supportive communities: ensuring safer and more supportive communities through the provision of community education and awareness initiatives and the implementation of other prevention and mitigation strategies, the strengthening of communities through volunteer involvement (eg. Rural Fire Service, the State Emergency Service, Volunteer Marine Rescue and the SES Cadets program) and ensuring public safety through the provision of emergency response services.

Better quality of life: ensuring the health and well-being of Queenslanders through the delivery of pre-hospital patient care and other health-related services (CPR For Life, first aid training, baby capsule hire) and the economic benefit of protecting community assets.

Valuing the environment: minimising environmental damage from bushfires through the use of fire as a land management tool and the management of chemical spills and hazardous materials.

Building Queensland's regions: supporting disaster mitigation and response and recovery efforts to sustain economic development in regional Queensland by minimising, where possible, the impact of disasters such as floods and cyclones.

To achieve these whole-of-Government priorities the Department of Emergency Services focuses on seven Strategic Priorities. These are:

Protecting Local Communities:

Provide high-quality emergency and disaster services that meet the needs of Queenslanders by focusing on basic service delivery and working closely with local communities.
Raise community awareness of how to prevent or minimise the impact of emergencies and disasters.
Raise awareness of our role and the services provided throughout Queensland.

Supporting Our People:

Recognise, support and safeguard our people and give them the tools and training necessary to effectively carry out their roles.
Create a work environment where teamwork is promoted and achievements are recognised.

Managing Our Resources:

Ensure resources are both managed effectively and strategically located to maximise emergency and disaster service delivery to the community.

Measuring Our Success:

Be accountable to the community and Government by measuring the effectiveness of our services and regularly reporting on our performance.
