Background of the Emergency Services Cadet Program

The Queensland State Emergency Services Cadet Scheme was approved by Cabinet on May 9, 1994.

In 2001 the State Emergency Services [SES] Cadet Scheme undertook consultation to gauge the level of support for the development of a youth program that reflected the activities of the Department of Emergency Services [DES]. The results were strongly in favour of the development of a program that provided the opportunity to involve the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service [QFRS] and the Queensland Ambulance Service [QAS] into the scheme currently operated by the SES. In May 2002, the Director-General granted approval for the establishment of the Emergency Services Cadet Program.

The enhanced program ensures the provision of broader emergency services related information, experiences and skills to young people.

As from January 2003, Queensland Fire and Rescue Service [QFRS], Queensland Ambulance Service [QAS] or Emergency Management Queensland [EMQ] can sponsor cadet groups established through the Emergency Services Cadet Program.
