What is the Emergency Services Cadet Program?
The Emergency Services Cadet Program is a youth development program that aims to assist young people to develop life skills and encourages young people to participate in their local community. It builds initiative, leadership, self-discipline and loyalty. The skills and knowledge learned in the program can be used to assist community safety. The program introduces Queensland’s young people to forms of emergency services related training that will better equip them for community life.
The Emergency Services Cadet Program aims to develop:
- Life skills and encourage participation in local communities;
- Personal strengths, including self confidence, initiative, leadership and teamwork;
- Skills and knowledge to enhance community safety; and
- A potential recruitment pool for emergency services.
To qualify for enrolment as an Emergency Services Cadet, a young person must:
- Have commenced grade 8 at high school but not reached the age of 16 years;
- Have their parent’s or guardian’s permission to enrol;
- Be a resident of Australia; and
- Be certified by their parent or guardian as being capable of carrying out the normal duties and activities of the Emergency Services Cadets.
Young people 16 years and over are not eligible to join as a cadet. Existing cadet members may be able to continue to serve within the cadet group until they reach 18 years of age if the cadet group permits. This will depend on the group’s ability to support cadet members over the age of 16 years.
