Napranum/Weipa

Weipa Emergency Services Cadet group have plenty to smile about. Weipa, being situated on beautiful Cape York Peninsula, is a bauxite mining town steeped in history.

This Peninsula region has, amongst other community infrastructures, Western Cape College. The College has students from one of the largest secondary education catchment areas in Queensland. As a result of this, Weipa Emergency Services Cadets have 20 Cadets from as far away as Aurukun, Napranum, Marpoon and other scattered outstations from the Cape. This group commenced in 1998.

Even though Weipa Cadets is a State Emergency Services sponsored group, many Cadets are Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children boarding at the College. Therefore Western Cape College play a big role in supporting the Cadet Group.

Weipa Cadet group has 7 adult leaders, none of whom have strong backgrounds in any of the Emergency Services. Because of this, Weipa Cadets rely on support from individuals with skills in various areas, coming from many other community organizations. This system of shared community support works very well for Weipa Emergency Services Cadets.
