Safer Communities Awards 2002

On the 19th September, Emergency Services Minister Mike Reynolds presented four Queensland agencies with Safer Communities Awards at Parliament House in Brisbane.

The winning entries from each State are eligible for the National Awards, hosted by Emergency Management Australia, which will be presented next month at Parliament House in Canberra. The National Awards will coincide with World Disaster Reduction Day, which focuses attention on what can be done to reduce vulnerability to disasters.

A significant number of entries were received from local government and State bodies, as well as volunteer organisations across Queensland.

This year’s Award winners are:

Emergency Management Queensland – for its development of a project entitled, Economic and Social Costs of Disasters in Regional Queensland, designed to provide government and private sector agencies with a capability to assess the likely or actual impacts of disasters on communities.
Brisbane City Council – for its Bushfire Awareness Program, which is designed to provide Council’s bushland neighbours with awareness and education about dealing with bushfire risks.
Queensland Fire and Rescue Service – for its Confined Space Training Facility in Toowoomba which provides a means of conducting vital training for fire officers on a regionalised basis.
Queensland Ambulance Service – for its Kenilworth First Responders Team entry which provides response to health emergencies through a system of trained community volunteers.
