Safer Communities Awards 2002
On the 19th September, Emergency Services Minister Mike Reynolds presented
four Queensland agencies with Safer Communities Awards at Parliament House
in Brisbane.
The winning entries from each State are eligible for the National Awards,
hosted by Emergency Management Australia, which will be presented next
month at Parliament House in Canberra. The National Awards will coincide
with World Disaster Reduction Day, which focuses attention on what can
be done to reduce vulnerability to disasters.
A significant number of entries were received from local government and
State bodies, as well as volunteer organisations across Queensland.
This year’s Award winners are:

Emergency Management Queensland – for its development of a project
entitled, Economic and Social Costs of Disasters in Regional Queensland,
designed to provide government and private sector agencies with a
capability to assess the likely or actual impacts of disasters on
communities. |

Brisbane
City Council – for its Bushfire Awareness Program, which is
designed to provide Council’s bushland neighbours with awareness
and education about dealing with bushfire risks. |

Queensland
Fire and Rescue Service – for its Confined Space Training Facility
in Toowoomba which provides a means of conducting vital training for
fire officers on a regionalised basis. |

Queensland
Ambulance Service – for its Kenilworth First Responders Team
entry which provides response to health emergencies through a system
of trained community volunteers. |
