Queensland Ambulance Service Community Safety InitiativesThe Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) has a century of experience in caring for Queensland communities. The service offers public education programs aimed at giving members of the community the skills to prevent and respond to an emergency. The community has become increasingly aware of the benefits of adopting appropriate injury and illness prevention strategies and in response the QAS continues to develop and implement innovative and effective communication programs. More information on community safety initiatives is available on the QAS website: www.ambulance.qld.gov.au First AidThe QAS is an award-winning training organisation, teaching all levels of patient care skills. The service offers a variety of practical community first aid courses, from introductory first aid right through to advanced resuscitation. With the knowledge gained from these courses, thousands of participants have been able to play a vital role in saving the lives of others. In keeping with contemporary training programs, QAS has revised and gained accreditation for 14 first aid courses. Courses range from a four-hour beginners course to an advanced 16-hour course where students learn emergency treatment for sudden collapse, fractures, bleeding, burns, poisons, bites and stings. Theres also a 24-hour course in senior first aid and injury prevention in childcare and a 32-hour course in occupational first aid. The QAS schedules classes according to community demand at ambulance stations throughout Queensland. For all first aid course inquiries and enrolments call (07) 3247 8339. Primary and secondary schools throughout Queensland are encouraged to adopt
an ambo to increase first aid awareness among students. In conjunction
with QAS and local ambulance stations, ambulance officers link with schools
to deliver relevant first aid training, raise awareness of accident and
injury prevention and school safety.
