Community Safety Initiatives
Queensland Fire and Rescue Service Community Safety Initiatives
As part of its commitment to community safety and fire prevention, the
Queensland Fire and Rescue Authority (QFRS) has undertaken a series of
public education initiatives.
These programs will be accelerated, with a focus on at risk
target groups, such as the elderly, young children, low socio-economic
groups, Indigenous Australians and people from non-English speaking backgrounds.
More information on community safety initiatives is available on the
QFRS website: www.fire.qld.gov.au
Fire Ed
Fire Ed is a professionally prepared education program for Year One
students and provides important fire safety lessons. The program involves
firefighters visiting schools and teaching fire education and has great
potential to effectively reach more people as children pass the messages
along to family and friends.

Safehome
Safehome is one of QFRSs premier community safety initiatives
and enables members of the community to receive life-saving information
in their homes. As part of the program, firefighters inspect a home and
advise on the best location for smoke alarms, assist in the formulation
of a home evacuation plan and address the specific needs of householders
such as the correct and safe storage of cleaners, paints and oils.
Safehome is available free of charge.
Call 13 QGOV (13 7468) during office hours to arrange an Safehome
visit.

Fight Fire Fascination (FFF) Program
This programs prime role is to provide and implement an intervention
strategy with the support of family and community to eliminate the incidence
of fires started by juveniles.
This program is vital in the prevention of fires as juvenile fire setting
is one of the top five causes of structural fire in Queensland and one
of the major causes of grass and bush fires.

Sustained Fire Safety in Communities Project
This project will examine community development as a factor in enhancing
fire safety and is funded through the Department of Housings Community
Renewal Program.
A goal of the project is to produce a collaborative approach to community
safety between the QFRS and the community. This pilot project is currently
being delivered in the Woodridge, Inala and Garbutt areas only.

Seniors Fire Ed
The Seniors Fire Ed program is delivered by retired firefighters and
provides fire safety information to the elderly in the community. Statistics
show older people, along with the very young, are most at risk of dying
in residential fires.
Foster a Firefighter Program
This program establishes a permanent link between firefighters from local
fire stations and the school community. Schools foster a firefighter who
then becomes the link for all QFRS activities within that school, delivering
fire and general safety messages.
For details, contact your local fire station.

An innovative smoke alarm kit produced by the QFRS aims to educate property
owners and tenants on a number of key fire safety issues, to reduce the
number of fires and fire deaths that occur in rental properties.
The kit includes an instructive CD-Rom and an awareness booklet and has
been distributed to fire stations, community safety officers, real estate
agents, members of Queenslands Property Owners Association, Tenants
Union, Safety in Residential Dwellings Taskforce and other Government
