Rockhampton Flood Update - Monday 25 February - 12pm
02/25/2008
Heavy rain in Rockhampton early this morning caused flash flooding to a number of low lying areas of the city.
The SES received about 70 calls from locations across Rockhampton mainly for minor inundation to homes and some leaking roofs.
Currently two teams of SES volunteers are responding to requests for assistance.
Relief crews from Livingstone SES are on standby.
Some streets affected included Musgrave Road on the northern side of town and William and Gladstone road on the western side of town.
According to the Bureau of Meteorology 165mm of rain fell at Rockhampton Airport.
Once the rain stopped the majority of the water receded within about 90 minutes.
At 9.30am the Bureau reported the level of the Fitzroy River as 7.7m and steady.
The Bureau predicts the early morning downpour may cause a small rise in the river level between 100mm and 200mm today.
This is not expected to change the situation in Rockhampton.
Emergency Management Queensland advises residents to avoid travelling through or playing in the flood waters as they are often fast moving and have hidden dangers below the surface.
Residents who require SES assistance or sandbags should call 132 500.
