EMQ Rescue Helicopter locates missing fisherman - NSW
02/28/2008
Emergency Management Queensland continues to assist Australian Search and Rescue (AUSSAR) and NSW Police in the search for a missing fisherman off the northern New South Wales coastline.
At 7.14 a.m. (Queensland time) this morning the Emergency Management Queensland Rescue Helicopter located a man in waters off the coast of northern New South Wales. He was one of a pair of missing fishermen that EMQ and SES searchers were searching for.
The man was located while the aircraft was flying on an assigned search grid.
It is believed the man had been in the water for more than 30 hours after a fishing boat he was on sank yesterday.
He was found six kilometres off the mainland, 12.5 kilometres north-east of Ballina Airport.
The man was winched to safety and treated for hyperthermia by a Queensland Ambulance Service paramedic on board the chopper while being transported to Ballina Airport.
The man was then transferred to hospital.
The EMQ Rescue Helicopter re-fuelled at Ballina Airport and has since rejoined the search for remaining fisherman who had been on board the vessel when it sank. Multiple aircraft continue to search the area.
