05/30/2008
There have been 94 calls to 132 500 in the 24 hours to 11.30am.
There have been 13 SES activations for Maroochydore, Noosa, Tewantin, Nambour, Coolum, Bundaberg, Maryborough and Hervey Bay SES groups since 6.30am this morning.
These calls for assistance are expected to rise throughout the afternoon – they tend to be leaking roofs, some sandbagging and trees across driveways. There is one report of a tree fallen on a car in Coolum.
Hervey Bay has experienced the highest number of activations, and minor inundations have occurred to 12 residences in Pt Vernon, Kawungan and Pialba, which are suburbs of Hervey Bay.
There have been seven inundations into the residences, and the other five were reported to have external inundation under houses.
Three businesses on The Esplanade in Torquay have been provided with sandbags and are continuing business as normal.
Over 20 other residences are being monitored for possible inundation and sandbagging may be required.
There are reports that the wind speed has dropped throughout northern areas of the North Coast Region and the intensity of the rain has also decreased.
The SES is encouraging residents to follow a few simple steps that can help prepare your family and property:
o Repair any loose roof tiles, eaves and roof screws, clear your gutters and downpipes and trim overhanging tree branches if safe to do so.
o Secure animals and loose items around your yard.
o Park vehicles under shelter or secure with tarpaulins or blankets.
o Prepare an emergency kit for your family and keep a list of emergency contact numbers handy.
o Stayed tuned to your local radio station for storm warnings and advice.
For assistance from the State Emergency Service (SES) call 132 500 or if it is a life-threatening situation contact Triple Zero.
