Weather Update North Coast and Brisbane regions - June 2 @ 12pm
06/2/2008
SES volunteers in the North Coast and Brisbane regions are continuing to respond to calls for assistance as heavy rain inundates south east Queensland.
The SES hotline 132 500 received 316 calls for assistance between 10am Sunday and 10am today. Most of these calls have been for sandbagging and for assistance with leaking roofs in the Noosa and Maroochydore area as well as areas surrounding Buderim, Nambour, Yandina, Mudjimba, Marcoola, Bli Bli and Coolum.
Volunteers in Brisbane have received approximately 40 requests for assistance up until 11am this morning including 12 in Petrie and five in Caboolture. The SES are preparing for the possibility of worsening conditions throughout the afternoon.
The Queensland Fire and Rescue Service has also conducted a number of swiftwater rescues throughout the south east today including the rescue of two teenagers who were playing in floodwaters and got stuck in a tree in Cooroy.
The SES is encouraging residents to follow a few simple steps that can help prepare your family and property:
• Repair any loose roof tiles, eaves and roof screws, clear your gutters and downpipes and trim overhanging tree branches if safe to do so.
• Secure animals and loose items around your yard.
• Park vehicles under shelter or secure with tarpaulins or blankets.
• Prepare an emergency kit for your family and keep a list of emergency contact numbers handy.
• Stayed tuned to your local radio station for storm warnings and advice.
For assistance from the State Emergency Service (SES) call 132 500 or if it is a life-threatening situation contact Triple Zero.
