Emergency Services provides Disaster Awareness education to Northern Beaches schools

06/27/2008

The Townsville Emergency Management Queensland (EMQ) office has undertaken an extensive disaster awareness education campaign throughout local schools along the Northern Beaches.
Northern Regional Disaster Management Officer, Libby Davis, will spend the morning educating students at St Anthony’s Catholic College in Deeragun. She will provide four Year 9 classes with disaster preparation, survival and recovery information.
Ms Davis said educating Year 9 children was an effective way of spreading the message.
“We have chosen a method that has proved incredibly effective in getting messages to the community as a whole, and that is by targeting the awareness sessions at school aged children, who then take the message home to family, friends and relatives.
“There is also a link to work that has been undertaken by the local councils. Just prior to the recent council elections and amalgamations, Townsville and Thuringowa City Councils combined forces to produce a Tsunami Evacuation Guide pamphlet which is included in the presentations.
“In Years 5 and 9, the kids complete a module at school on disasters, so this type of session is particularly appropriate and generally very well received, no matter the age group.
“The presentation provides information on a variety of disaster types, but focuses mainly on storm surge and Tsunami, explaining the difference between the two, what can cause them and what can be done to prepare for them which subsequently increases the chances of surviving and recovering from these emergencies.”
