South west Queensland celebrates SES volunteers

14/11/2012

Toowoomba State Emergency Service (SES) volunteer Brian Cook was awarded the SES Week Regional Member of the Year award at a ceremony in Warwick this evening.

Toowoomba Area Executive Manager Robert Bundy said the award recognised Mr Cook’s dedicated 25 years service to the SES, especially in his role as training coordinator for the Toowoomba Regional SES Unit.

“Mr Cook has ensured all 10 groups in the Toowoomba Regional SES Unit have a structured training program and is committed to ensuring all members have the skills necessary to undertake their functions within the unit and wider region,” Mr Bundy said.

“He is a true gentleman who dedicates himself selflessly to the community, his members and to the SES.”

Mr Bundy also presented the Regional Unit of the Year award to Toowoomba Regional SES Unit.

“Toowoomba SES has shown outstanding management, training, recruitment and retention structures that ensure they are prepared and capable to best assist their community,”
he said.

“The unit has created a welcoming and friendly environment which has seen their membership steadily increase and maintain strong retention rates.”

Mitchell SES Group was named Regional Operational Response of the Year for their commitment and management of the SES operational response to the flooding event in February.

“The group demonstrated outstanding commitment and service to the towns and communities of Mitchell and its surrounding areas during the devastating floods earlier this year,” Mr Bundy said.

Mr Bundy praised all SES volunteers in south west Queensland for their efforts throughout the year.

“SES volunteers are called to work in times of emergency when most of the community are bunkering down,” he said.

“Their work doesn’t stop when disasters end. Instead, SES volunteers dedicate their time to recovery and rebuilding their communities.”

Mr Bundy also presented SES Week Awards to SES volunteers who displayed exceptional dedication to their units and communities.

Volunteers who received the certificates were: Eric McGlashan (Inglewood Group), Matthew Sondergeld (Warwick Group), Clinton Chambers (Mitchell Group), Will Small (Mitchell Group), Grant Waldron (Mitchell Group), Steven Long (Miles Group), Dawn Carillo (Gatton Group), Vance Sinden (Warwick Group), Tony Dorin (Mitchell Group) and Jorgen Andersen (Texas Unit).
