Regional Operations Branch

The Regional Operations Branch is the Regional Service Delivery arm of EMQ’s disaster management and SES programs.

EMQ has seven regions which are aligned to the other operational divisions of the Department during normal business activity and aligned with Local Government boundaries and Police Districts for disaster management coordination. EMQ Regions conduct a number of key activities, for example:

Provision of leadership strategic guidance, developing and monitoring the effectiveness of EMQ disaster management and State Emergency Service (SES) support programs within each region;
Provision of whole-of-Government and inter-regional coordination and collaboration to enhance community safety and operational service delivery to communities in regards to disaster prevention, preparedness, response and recovery; and
Maintaining and enhancing relationships with key regional stakeholders, contributing to Statewide policy and program development and coordinating staffing and other resources to enhance delivery of departmental and EMQ services and effective SES operations.

Brisbane Region

The Brisbane Region (BR) covers approximately 3,900 square kilometres and includes the Local Government areas of Brisbane, Moreton Bay and Redlands. The Region extends north to include the areas of Bellthorpe and Elimbah, east along the coastline to Bribie Island, south to incorporate Redlands, and the western areas of Laceys creek and Lake Manchester.

Central Region

The Central Region (CR) covers approximately 419,510 square kilometres and includes the Local Government areas of Gladstone and Banana, Barcaldine, Barcoo, Longreach and Winton, Isaac, Mackay and Whitsunday, Central Highlands, Woorabinda and Rockhampton. The population is mostly concentrated around the coastal centres of Rockhampton, Mackay and Gladstone, with the Region containing several mining, pastoral and agricultural centres.

Far Northern Region

The Far Northern Region (FNR) covers approximately 288,538 square kilometres and includes the Local Government areas of Aurukun, Cairns, Cook, Cassowary Coast, Hope Vale, Kowanyama, Lockhart River, Mapoon, Napranum, Northern Peninsula Area, Pormpuraaw, Torres Shire, Torres Strait, Weipa, Wujal Wujal, Yarrabah, Croydon, Etheridge, and Tablelands.

North Coast Region

The North Coast Region (NCR) covers approximately 51,697 square kilometres and includes the Local Government areas of Bundaberg, North Burnett, South Burnett, Cherbourg, Gympie, Fraser Coast and Sunshine Coast. Hervey Bay and the Sunshine Coast are among the faster growing urban areas in Australia and attract a significant number of tourists throughout the year.

Northern Region

The Northern Region (NR) covers approximately 526,423 square kilometres and includes the Local Government areas of Boulia, Burke, Carpentaria, Cloncurry, Diamantina, Doomadgee, Mckinlay, Mornington, Mount Isa, Burdekin, Charters Towers, Flinders, Hinchinbrook, Palm Island, Richmond and Townsville. While the population is concentrated on the east coast, mining and agricultural and Indigenous communities populate inland areas. The coastal areas of the region are subjected to cyclones while inland areas are remote and are threatened by occasional major flooding and large wild fires.

South East Region

The South Eastern Region (SER) covers approximately 12,977 square kilometres and includes the Local Government areas of Gold Coast, Ipswich, Somerset, Logan, and Scenic Rim. It has some of the faster growing urban areas in Queensland and contains highly developed tourist areas on the Gold Coast. SER is the host locality to many major national and international community events such as Lexmark Indy Motor Grand Prix; Schoolies Festival and Big Day Out Rock Festival.

South West Region

The South Western Region (SWR) covers approximately 429,273 square kilometres and includes the Local Government areas of Goondiwindi, Southern Downs, Blackall-Tambo, Paroo, Bulloo, Quilpie, Murweh, Dalby, Baloone, Roma, Lockyer Valley and Toowoomba. The population is concentrated mainly in the eastern part of the Region with the western areas being more sparsely populated.
