Purpose, Mission and Values
Description and Purpose
Emergency Service Units, which are established under Section 89 (1) of the Disaster Management Act 2003, are volunteer emergency services groups located in rural and remote areas of Queensland.
The role of an Emergency Service Unit is to deliver a range of functions which may include SES functions, fire fighting and fire prevention functions within a community, through an integrated approach to human resources, plant and equipment allocation.
Emergency Service Units will provide to rural and remote communities some or all of the functions traditionally associated with Rural Fire Brigades, SES Units and First Responder Groups from within a single, unified and collocated structure.
The key rationale for the integration of these functions is that many rural and remote communities do not have the infrastructure or human or physical resources to be able to sustain multiple volunteer emergency response agencies.
By their very nature and the communities in which they are established, Emergency Service Units rely on strong local community backing and Local Government support.
Our Values
The Department of Emergency Services and Emergency Service Units value:
- The needs or rural and remote Queensland communities
- Effective and timely delivery of emergency services
- The needs of volunteers providing emergency services
- Teamwork and relationships with other community agencies
- Partnerships with Local Government and Community Councils
- Support from paid emergency services employees
Our Mission
The mission of ESUs is to provide effective and timely volunteer emergency services within rural and remote areas of Queensland.
