Media Release: Coopers Plains youngster alerts ambos to mum's medical emergency

11/5/2009

When his mum suddenly collapsed at their home last week, nine-year-old Luke Donovan knew he needed to call triple zero immediately.

Within seconds Luke had dialled triple zero (000) and was answered by Mark Scott, an Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD) based at the Queensland Ambulance Service Communications Centre at Spring Hill.

The Year Four student told Mark that his mother Cathie was a diabetic and had collapsed at their Coopers Plains home due to low blood sugar levels.

“Luke was able to tell us where he lived, what had happened, and followed my instructions exactly,” EMD Mark Scott said.

“He was very calm throughout the entire call and is a terrific example on why it is important to educate younger people in what to do in an emergency.”

Ms Donovan said she was extremely proud of her son.

“I only recently told him what he had to do if I started suffering from low blood sugar levels. When I collapsed and started to fit he got straight on the phone to call for an ambulance,” she said.

“I’m so glad he knew exactly what to do in an emergency.”

Media are invited to meet with the Donovan family as well as EMD Mark Scott.
