South East Qld residents urged to prepare for storms
11/5/2009
South east Queensland residents are being urged to prepare for severe storms which are expected to impact the region later today.
The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting severe storms for the south east coast district and Darling Downs areas this afternoon tending to rain overnight.
Emergency Management Queensland Director of Disaster Management, Mike Shapland said the start to the storm season had been quiet but that may change this afternoon.
“While we have seen a little bit of storm activity, we haven’t really seen a severe storm since the start of the season in October,” he said.
“This may have caused people to become complacent and not be as well prepared should they be faced with a storm situation this afternoon.”
Mr Shapland said it’s not too late for people to make last minute preparations.
“People can still take a number of steps today to prepare for the possibility of a storm this afternoon or this evening,” he said.
“It is particularly important that residents ensure their gutters are clear to avoid water backing up in their drains and making sure all outdoor furniture is secured so that it can’t become a projectile if the winds pick up.”
“It’s also important to keep your neighbours in mind and assist them, particularly if they are unable to complete preparations on their own.”
Other preparations include:
• Moving your car under cover or away from trees;
• Securing all external doors and windows and draw curtains;
• Checking your emergency kit and making sure you keep your valuables and medications handy; and
• Keeping the SES contact number 132 500 close by.
