Watch Out! (PDF / 5.4 MB)

Watch Out! Information Booklet (PDF / 977 KB)

Watch Out! (formerly called Junior Neighbourhood Watch) was developed through a joint partnership between Neighbourhood Watch (NHW), the Queensland Police Service (QPS), the Department of Emergency Services (DES) incorporating the three operational divisions; Queensland Fire and Rescue Service; Queensland Ambulance Service and Emergency Management Queensland and Education Queensland (EQ).

Watch Out! is a school-based program designed to develop skills and provide increased awareness of accident and injury prevention, crime prevention and personal safety.  Watch Out! aims to encourage students to adopt the objectives of the NHW Program, within both the school and broader community and is closely linked to EQ’s key learning areas of the school curriculum.

The program is aimed at middle years' students focusing on Level 3 and 4 outcomes in curriculum areas such as Health and Physical Education, English and the Arts.  It can be easily adapted to suit other year levels, small schools or multi-age classes.

Watch Out! has been developed to be delivered by teachers with the support of operational personnel where available. The program consists of five modules with lessons, assessment tasks, activity ideas and resources.  These modules are:

  1. In the community – identify and locate services in the community and ascertain student’s prior knowledge.
  2. To get the message – share information with the school community and promote keeping safe within the school and community.
  3. To stay safe – to familiarise students with key safety messages for protective behaviours and fire safety.
  4. In a medical emergency – to familiarise students with key safety messages for CPR and first aid awareness.
  5. In a disaster – to familiarise students with emergency and disaster situations and the role of the State Emergency Service.

Watch Out! is available for implementation into primary schools in Queensland. Interested schools should contact Strategic Policy and Executive Services, DES on telephone number (07) 3109 5068 or email despublications@emergency.qld.gov.au
