Honorary Ambulance Officers are primarily engaged by the QAS to provide support to Ambulance Officers, although they are sometimes the only response in rural and remote areas.
Honorary Ambulance Officers are engaged by the QAS under the following conditions:
| |
work on a voluntary basis as required; and |
| |
have obtained or are progressing towards the completion of a Certificate Level III in Health Science (Emergency Care and Transport). |
Honorary Officers are not classified as paid employees of the QAS but are reimbursed for travel costs, accommodation, meals and out-of-pocket expenses whilst they are undergoing training.
The QAS currently has a staff of 380 Honorary Ambulance Officers throughout the State.
Local Ambulance Committees (LACs) are made up of members of the community who take an active interest in the provision of ambulance services in their community.
The LACs liaise between the community and the QAS, and:
| |
promote community participation in and an awareness of ambulance services; |
| |
provide advice to the Commissioner in respect of ambulance services in their community; |
| |
carry out fundraising activities for the benefit of local ambulance services; and |
| |
manage money held in trust for the benefit of ambulance services in their community. |
To be eligible to be on a Local Ambulance Committee you must be 18 years of age or over, and permanently reside in the area served by the Local Ambulance Committee.
More information on Local Ambulance Committees is available on the Queensland Ambulance Service website.

The Emergency Services Cadets Scheme offers young Queenslanders the chance to learn skills to help their communities in time of disaster.
Each SES Cadet Unit has a Cadet Co-ordinator who is assisted by adult staff members and the SES Local Controller also closely monitors the unit. Youths can join the SES Cadets when they start Year 8 and continue until they turn 16.
See more information on the Emergency Services Cadets website.
